Song Dogs: Music
Sweet River
One day in early summer of '01, Angie and Greg were sitting on Angie's back porch fooling around with a couple of guitars, as usual. Usually, in those days, most of their inspiration came along instrumental lines, but here was clear lyrical inspiration. Angie came up with most of the lines with Greg kinda structuring things a bit. As Greg was poring over the scribbled lines Angie had just written, he realized that the song was about any passed parent in general and about his own mother in specific. This song was never recorded during that time; perhaps because of its seemingly personal nature; but Greg performed it often during performances in the interim. There does exist; which this website will soon exhibit; a recording, albeit a very poor one, of Greg doing Sweet River at a jam-session with a couple of other guitarists. Other than that, Greg simply carried this song around with him.
Alright Tonight
From 1999 thru 2001 Angie and Greg attended many concerts by many of their favorite artists. These were all inspirational events with both of them constantly expanding their musical base; in accordance with their inspirations. They were always favorably impressed with the Allman Brothers, having seen them three times during that time.
next featured songThe song, Alright tonight was developed by Angie specifically to offer that type of an extendable jam to their repertoire. In fact, before she came up with the title, which is always a chore with an instrumental, Angie used to refer to this song as, "That Allman Brothers-sounding one." The basic format of the song had been around for a few months, so the studio experience for this song, like most of this album, was swift and sweet; one take for Angie and Greg with their guitars (Angie's acoustic and Greg's electric, as usual.) and the main body was down. Then they added all that other stuff; the conga, the various other percussion, the piano and organ, the bass. After all that , the song took on a larger presence than they first anticipated. And it remains one of their favorites.
