This song began as only the structured intro part; I was gonna have it fade into another song at first but I decided to incorporate my free form delay stuff into the end. At first it was just the Sweep Pad on the synthesizer with a slide guitar over it. Then I laid another electric guitar lead for the last two verses and let that track meld into the free form. Then, as I listened to it, certain sounds began to be evoked from the action of the slide guitar and, later, from the free form so I found sound effects to go with these sounds. That big WOOF is from the slide after I had the dogs barking and the car crash came from how I crescendoed that verse up. I added that super-phased synthesizer to keep you off guard.
The sound effects during the free form are inspired from the sound of the guitar and seemed to go in order and eventually filled out to symbolize both the development of mankind in general and any specific life as well. The horses hoof-beats and then later the astronaut-like communications symbolize mankind's growth from horseback to rocket ship. The chains rattling are both a reference to enslavement but cannot help but to evoke thoughts of Jacob Marley's ghost, hence death. And, of course, the buzzing about symbolize death and decay but, as a ray of hope, we hear the same children from Still Beating on the first album and they are still laughing (although the do let out a sigh as the song finishes) . . .- Greg Robertson
