Song Dogs: Music
You Gotta Laugh
One day at the studio while they were setting stuff up, Angie began to fool around with the Les Paul Greg was gonna use for that session. She got all up close to the amp and got this real cool feedback effect that she was able to control pretty well. She asked Greg to pick up an acoustic and start playing some chords along with it. There was this really simple chord progression they'd been working on a bit lately which was in the same key. Greg variated back and forth between a straight strum and sort of a finger picked half strum in that same progression. When asked who played lead Angie just said, "You've Gotta Laugh." The birds and the car were added as an after thought but made for a nice diversion 'tween the intro and the song proper. And, of course, Greg stopped by a few years later to add drums.
